Charles Bridge

The stone bridge Charles IV began in 1357: 516 metres, sixteen arches and thirty statues between two towers.

For four centuries this was the only bridge across the Vltava in Prague. Charles IV laid its foundation stone in 1357 and Peter Parler’s workshop built it in sandstone; it was simply called the Stone Bridge until 1870.

The thirty statues were added mostly between 1683 and 1714 (those on the bridge today are copies). People touch the brass relief under St John of Nepomuk for luck. Come at dawn or after dark, when the bridge is almost empty.
