0.1 km
Prague Castle
A thousand years of kings and presidents on one hill: three courtyards, palaces, churches and the best view over the red roofs.
0.3 km
St Vitus Cathedral
The Gothic heart of the castle, begun in 1344 and finished in 1929, with the tombs of kings and a window by Alfons Mucha.
0.8 km
Golden Lane
Tiny houses built into the castle walls in the 16th century; Franz Kafka wrote in number 22.
1.6 km
Wallenstein Garden
A baroque garden with a grand loggia, a dripstone wall and peacocks, made for the general Albrecht von Wallenstein.
2.1 km
St Nicholas Church
The finest baroque church in Prague, with a green dome over the Lesser Town; Mozart played its organ in 1787.
2.7 km
Charles Bridge
The stone bridge Charles IV began in 1357: 516 metres, sixteen arches and thirty statues between two towers.
3.0 km
Old Town Bridge Tower
One of the most beautiful Gothic towers in Europe, guarding the bridge on the Old Town side.
3.1 km
Klementinum
The Jesuit college with a baroque library hall and an astronomical tower that has measured Prague's weather since 1775.
3.6 km
Old Town Square & the Astronomical Clock
The square at the heart of the Old Town and its clock, ticking since 1410, with the apostles parading on the hour.
3.8 km
Týn Church
The two dark spires over Old Town Square, 80 metres high, with Tycho Brahe buried inside.
The Royal Way, downhill
The kings of Bohemia rode up this way to be crowned; we walk it the easy way, downhill. We meet at the castle gates at half past nine, when the courtyards are still quiet, and finish three hours later under the Astronomical Clock as it strikes.
On the way: the castle and St Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane, the Wallenstein Garden, the Lesser Town and its baroque church, Charles Bridge and the lanes of the Old Town. Comfortable shoes, please: there are cobbles and the Old Castle Steps.
On the way
- The castle courtyards before the crowds
- Down the Old Castle Steps to the Lesser Town
- Charles Bridge with a guide who knows every statue
- The apostles at the Astronomical Clock
